Emotional Transformation Therapy (ETT®)
What If You Don’t Have to Know Exactly What’s Underneath Before You Begin?
Sometimes you know exactly what’s bothering you. You recognize the pattern, understand where it comes from, or know what you want to work on. Other times, you just know something isn’t right. You may feel anxious, overwhelmed, reactive, disconnected, physically tense, or stuck in a pattern that doesn’t seem to change, even when you understand it.
ETT gives us a way to work with what you already know while also allowing us to discover what may emerge through the therapeutic process. I am an ETT® Complex Trauma Certified Therapist and primarily use ETT in my psychotherapy practice.

What Is Emotional Transformation Therapy?
Emotional Transformation Therapy is an experiential form of psychotherapy developed by Dr. Steven Vazquez.
ETT combines therapeutic connection with specific forms of visual stimulation—including color, light, eye movement, and other visual techniques—to work with emotional and physiological responses during the therapy session.
Rather than only describing an experience after it happened, ETT gives us an opportunity to work with aspects of that experience as they are occurring in the room.
That might include an emotion, physical sensation, memory, thought, image, belief, relationship experience, or another response that becomes relevant during the session.
Sometimes we already know what needs attention—a traumatic experience, painful relationship, loss, fear, memory, or pattern that continues to affect you. Other times, ETT may help bring previously unrecognized emotions, memories, associations, experiences, or patterns into awareness through the therapeutic process.
The goal isn’t to force something to happen or begin with an assumption about what’s underneath.
We pay attention to what emerges and work with it.
Knowing Why Doesn’t Always Change the Response
You can understand why something happened. You can recognize a pattern, know where it came from, or know how you want to respond differently. And still find yourself feeling or reacting the same way when you’re actually in the moment.
Insight matters. But insight alone may not change an emotional or physiological response.
ETT allows us to work experientially with those responses while they’re active. The therapeutic process may involve accessing what’s present, processing what emerges, and integrating those experiences—not simply understanding them intellectually.
What Can ETT Work With?
Emotional Transformation Therapy has been used clinically across a wide range of emotional, psychological, relational, behavioral, and physical concerns.
Because people rarely fit neatly into a single category, ETT may be used as part of therapy for concerns that overlap across mental health, relationships, physical health, trauma, and performance.
Mental Health & Emotional Well-Being
Anxiety • Panic • Depression • Chronic stress • Burnout • OCD • ADHD • Sleep difficulties • Emotional regulation
Trauma, Attachment & Relationships
Trauma • PTSD • Complex trauma • Attachment difficulties • Relationship patterns • Grief & loss • Identity • Dissociation • Life transitions
Pain, Physical Symptoms & Health
Chronic pain • Headaches & migraines • TMJ • Vision problems • Concussion/TBI • Injury & recovery • Somatic/physical symptoms • Autoimmune conditions • Cancer-related concerns • Chronic illness
Eating, Behavior & Lifestyle
Eating disorders • Disordered eating • Weight-related concerns • Addictions • Behavioral patterns that feel difficult to change
Performance & High-Pressure Environments
Performance anxiety • Confidence • Fear of failure • Emotional reactivity • Injury recovery • Athletes • High-achieving adults
ETT has also been used as part of treatment for more complex presentations, including bipolar disorder and dissociative disorders. When medical, psychiatric, or physical conditions are involved, ETT may be used as part of care alongside appropriate medical, psychiatric, or other professional treatment when indicated.
You don’t need to have a diagnosis, or even know exactly what is causing the problem to begin. Sometimes you know what needs attention. Other times, the therapeutic process helps us discover it.
What Does an ETT Session Look Like?
ETT can look different depending on what we’re working with and how you respond. During a session, I may use tools such as an SRT (Spectral Resonance Technique) chart, therapeutic light devices, wands, or goggles as part of the visual stimulation used in ETT.
You may be asked to notice colors, follow visual movement, attend to changes in emotion or physical sensation, or describe thoughts, memories, images, and associations that arise. Throughout the process, we remain in communication about what you’re experiencing.
ETT is not something being “done to you.” You are actively involved in the therapeutic process, and what emerges helps guide where we go next.
ETT Intensives
For specialized concerns, I also offer short-term ETT intensives that allow us to work more frequently or for longer periods of time than a traditional weekly therapy schedule.
ETT intensives may be considered for concerns such as anxiety, panic, sleep difficulties, ADHD-related concerns, OCD, chronic stress, and emotional or stress-related components of chronic pain and physical illness.
An intensive isn’t automatically the right approach for everyone. We’ll determine together whether standard therapy, an intensive format, or another treatment structure makes the most sense for what you’re experiencing.
ETT as Part of an Integrative Approach
ETT is my primary therapeutic modality, but I don’t believe the person sitting across from me can be reduced to a technique. Your thoughts, emotions, physical experiences, relationships, attachment patterns, identity, history, current environment, and the demands placed on you can all matter.
ETT gives us one way to access and process what may be contributing to your experience. My broader approach helps us understand that experience in the context of your life. The approach should fit the person—not the person fit the approach.
