Mental Performance Coaching
Train What You Can't See
You spend countless hours developing your skills, preparing for what you do, and trying to get better. For athletes, that may mean training and competition. For coaches, leaders, and professionals, it may mean preparing to make decisions, communicate, lead others, and perform when the stakes are high.
But what happens when the pressure rises?
Maybe you hesitate when you normally react. One mistake follows you into the next shift, play, point, or decision. You start thinking instead of trusting. Confidence changes depending on the result. Emotions begin influencing your decisions. Or you know exactly what you're capable of, but accessing it consistently when it matters is another story.
Mental performance coaching is about intentionally developing the skills that help you prepare, respond, adapt, lead, and perform when something is being asked of you.
At Life Well Dunn, that means more than motivational speeches or positive thinking. We train practical skills around regulation, confidence, focus, self talk, communication, leadership, routines, preparation, resilience, and responding to adversity.
The goal isn't to eliminate pressure.
It's to become more capable within it.

Is This You?
You may benefit from mental performance coaching if you:
Perform better in practice than in competition.
Lose confidence after mistakes or poor performances.
Overthink instead of trusting what you've trained.
Feel pressure from expectations, coaches, parents, teammates, colleagues, or yourself.
Struggle to stay focused when emotions rise.
Let one mistake or difficult moment affect what happens next.
Have difficulty letting go of outcomes you cannot control.
Struggle to communicate or lead effectively when pressure increases.
Feel mentally exhausted before the performance even begins.
Know you're capable of more than you're consistently expressing.
Want to perform with greater confidence, freedom, consistency, and enjoyment.
These are not simply personality traits you either have or don't have.
Mental skills can be trained.
The Life Well Dunn Performance Framework
No two performers are exactly alike, so no two coaching plans should be exactly alike.
We begin by understanding you as a performer. What are you already doing well? Where are you getting stuck? What changes under pressure? What are the demands of your environment? What skills would actually help?
From there, we can build a personalized Performance Roadmap around four interconnected areas.
Regulation
Develop the ability to recognize and manage your internal state so you can respond more effectively to pressure, mistakes, adversity, and changing demands.
This may include breathing, emotional regulation, reset strategies, awareness, and learning how to shift your state when needed.
Identity
Develop a stronger understanding of who you want to be and how you want to show up.
We can work with values, standards, beliefs, purpose, confidence, and the relationship between who you are and what you achieve so that your identity is not constantly being rewritten by the latest result.
Capacity
Build the mental skills that give you more options when things get difficult.
This can include attention control, focus, self awareness, resilience, adaptability, decision making, emotional flexibility, communication, leadership, and the ability to stay engaged when things do not go according to plan.
Expression
Bring the work into performance.
Expression is the ability to access and trust what you've developed when it matters. That can include competition routines, communication, decision making, responding to mistakes, body language, playing freely, leading others, and allowing your preparation to show up in the moment.
How you carry yourself matters too. Body language can influence how you communicate with teammates, coaches, opponents, or the people you lead, and it can become part of how you intentionally respond when things are going well or when they aren't.
The goal isn't perfection. It's greater consistency in accessing what you're capable of.
Mental Skills Have to Be Practiced
Mental performance is not something we only talk about once a week.
Just like physical training, developing these skills requires awareness, repetition, application, and adjustment.
Depending on your needs, coaching may include a personalized Performance Roadmap, individualized mental performance strategies, breathing and regulation work, competition preparation, routines and reset strategies, visualization, self talk, attention and focus training, body language, communication and leadership development, weekly action steps, accountability, progress tracking, and support between sessions.
Some tools will work for you. Others may not.
We test them, practice them, and determine what actually helps you perform.
The goal is to build tools you can use when I'm not there.
Mental Performance Coaching and Therapy Are Different
I offer both mental performance coaching and psychotherapy, but they are different services with different purposes.
Mental performance coaching is developmental.
We focus on skills, strategies, routines, preparation, awareness, and behaviors that can help you function and perform more effectively. The work is oriented toward where you are now, what you're trying to develop, and how you can practice those skills in your performance environment.
Therapy is a clinical mental health service.
Therapy gives us a place to investigate and work with emotional, psychological, relational, behavioral, and experiential concerns. It may involve understanding and processing experiences or patterns that are contributing to what someone is experiencing, and it may include assessment, diagnosis when appropriate, and treatment of mental health conditions.
There can be overlap in the topics that come up. Confidence, anxiety, emotions, relationships, identity, pressure, and self talk can matter in both.
The difference is the purpose of the work and how we work with what shows up.
Mental performance coaching is not psychotherapy and is not intended to diagnose or treat mental health conditions. If something emerges that would be more appropriately addressed through therapy or another healthcare service, we'll talk about the appropriate next step.
Confidence Is More Than a Feeling
You will not always feel confident.
You will not always feel calm.
You will not always be focused, motivated, comfortable, or completely free from doubt.
And you don't have to be.
Mental performance isn't about creating the perfect internal state before you can perform. It's about developing the skills to recognize what's happening, respond intentionally, and stay connected to what you're trying to do.
Confidence isn't something you have to wait to feel before you act.
You can prepare. You can practice. You can respond. You can reset. And you can develop greater trust in your ability to handle what happens next.
Train what you can't see.
Mental Performance for Athletes, Coaches, and Leaders
Mental performance coaching is available for individuals, teams, groups, coaching staffs, and organizations.
For athletes, the work may focus on confidence, focus, regulation, routines, responding to mistakes, preparation, communication, leadership, and performing under pressure.
For coaches, the work can include leadership, communication, emotional regulation, decision making, giving and receiving feedback, managing conflict, building trust, creating standards, and navigating the demands of leading athletes and teams.
For business leaders and professionals, the same underlying skills can be applied within a different environment. The work may include leadership, communication, decision making, focus, emotional regulation, navigating pressure and uncertainty, responding to adversity, and functioning effectively when demands are high.
The work is built around the person, team, and environment rather than applying the same performance model to everyone.
